ASSU UPDATE: STRIKE TO BE CONTINUED

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has decided to roll over the six-month old strike that commenced on Monday, February 14th 2022 after series of Stormy discussion.  This decision was taken after the National Executive Council meeting at their headquarters at the University of Abuja on Monday morning.   The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASSU,  is set to continue its struggle. The industrial action has entered it's 196th day todaqy ( Monday, 29th of August, 2022).

NUC LISTS 58 ILLEGAL UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA   Eagle News Gists reports that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has made a list of 58 universities operating illegally in the country. In a statement made available on its official website, the commission also disclosed that it was investigating eight other universities for running illegal degree programs. OSHOALA EYES SECOND CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GOAL

ASISAT OSHOALA will be hoping to get her second Champions League goal of the season when Barcelona Femini visit Wolfsburg in the second leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League match on Saturday (today). Oshoala returned from a two-month injury lay-off to feature for 17 minutes in her side’s 5-1 thrashing of the German side at Camp Nou last Friday. She came on for Jennifer Hermoso in the 73rd minute of the win. The champions will be hoping to round off their semi-final game in Germany and Oshoala, whose only goal in the competition came in the 4-1 win against her former team Arsenal on October 5, has only been able to make four appearances in this season’s campaign. INSECURITY: POPULATION OF IDP IN BENUE NOW TWO MILLION –GOVT

The Benue State Government, on Thursday, said there were eight official and 20 unofficial internally displaced persons’ camps in the state. The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency and Maintenance Agency, Dr Emmanuel Shior, said the increase in the number of IDP camps in the state was a result of the continuous attacks on some communities in recent times. Shior said this during the distribution of relief materials to IDPs, saying the number of IDPs has increased to nearly two million. He stated, “There have been constant attacks on several communities in the state. We have received reports of attacks in eight communities in the Kwande Local Government Area; we have gone there and we will go back to take a needs assessment so as to be able to provide interim measures. “We have about seven official camps and over 20 unofficial camps, and some of the IDPs are also in the host communities. NIMC PORTAL CRASHES, BANKS, TELCOS, PASSPORT ISSUANCE SUFFER

Thousands of telecommunication subscribers nationwide seeking to retrieve their lost Subscriber Identity Module cards or acquire new lines temporarily have been left stranded, following a technical glitch in the National Identity Management Commission portal that has grounded SIM-related services. The affected NIMC portal enables telecom firms, the Nigerian Immigration Service, banks and other organisations to verify the National Identity Number of their customers before attending to them, in line with the Federal Government’s directive. Following the directive by the Nigerian Communications Commission for the inclusion of NIN in the requirements for all new and existing SIM cards, telecom firms are required to synchronise their SIM registration portals with the NIMC portal in order to verify the details of their subscribers. ASUU DECLARES WARNING STRIKE IN ALL NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged its chapters across the country to make it known to members of the public, the situation between the union and the Federal Government. This is as it declared Monday, February 7, 2022, as a lecture-free day in a bid to enhance the sensitisation. The National President of the Union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday evening. According to some sources, President Muhammadu Buhari had pledge the commitment of his administration to fulfilling the agreement with the union few days before the union declared the warning strike. President Muhammadu Buhari made the promise when members of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council visited him to discuss the lingering issues.
